I am beginning to suspect that it is something to do with the Vista firewall. I have been trying different settings and it has an effect on the speed and accessibility. Thanks mr Gates for a really crap product! Hi, I had uninstalled OneCare antivirus, and the problem immediately disappeared. But, I was too fast celebrating my victory, because the problem showed up next day after the second reboot. The transfer speed appeared even slower than before, despite the thing that no antivirus was installed.
I called to Microsoft support. They archived the question as unresolved. Vista was a clean install, had any Vista drivers downloaded and ready, everything went great. Lots of web research, checking settings, rechecking…no answers.
Then some chance comments about update problems with others made me uninstall all automatic updates. Still no good. Rolled back the driver.. Printer, internet, network, everything. Hope it helps!!!! Now do i re-install Vista 4th time lucky and take pot luck that my network grows visibly slower before my eyes or opt for the less painful option of pulling my toe nails out with a pair of long nose pliers whilst sticking pins into a doll of Bill Gates Decisions decisions sticking with xp for the moment D.
Thank you Mark! You are genuous! That was exactly my case. I also have Realtek network card in my computer. You just helped to bring my Vista back to the life! Everything works perfectly now. Thank you so much! That was it!! Hours and hours of pulling hair is OVER. Downloaded Firefox in 5 seconds flat! Glad it wasnt, almost blamed the router.
I also uninstalled Mcafee Insecurity Suite to help with some issues I was having. After all this I still had Site Advisor on which I also removed. I figure it could be a registry setting I may need to change in order for it to stop seeing it?
Finally… after so much tries on vista, i literally, disable firewall, window defender, remove my symantec anti-virus, uncheck window features, but its still the same…. I bought a new Acer laptop for my daughter and have the same internet download problems with the cable provider. But when I took the laptop to my home and changing nothing tried it on my DSL internet conection there was no problems whatsoever the machine was as fast as advertised. From device manager I removed the realtek adapter, telling vista to delete the drivers too.
Then, the system re-installed inmediately the original drivers again and it worked! I hope others with the same problem find this page. Mark Pickering, u saved my day! I really hope that Realtek solves this issue, and replaces the updated driver with a decent one! In there you need to go into the properties of your Network Card and go to Advanced and under Connection type set the speed to BaseTx instead of Auto negotiate.
Yes it worked for me, thank you very much indeed!!! After 3 weeks of hair pulling and research I was about to reinstall Vista when I found this thread. After rolling back the Realtek network drive all is well. No thanks to Microsoft. They should have an immediated update for this problem. The roll back worked for me too. The Vista home worked great but I had the same problems with slow transfers from the other computers and the internet to the Vista Ultimate.
It had a Realtek network onboard. Funny thing is the upload test on pcpitstop. After rolling back the driver the download is K like on the other computers.
Basically very simple, it just took me two days to figure it out and find the right driver. All the blogs and websites talk about disabling this, and tweeking that. Install the new driver and just like magic your internet speeds and file transfer speeds should once again be smokin, of course your milage will vary dependent on the speed of your ISP and network.
I just bought a Dell with Windows Home Vista. I have a broadcom.. I uninstalled Mcaffee.. I uninstalled network drivers, they reinstalled.. Quite frustrating. If this is innovation, I wonder when someone will come up with a reversal that works.
The new dell came with McAfee installed already, i tried disabling the firewall but it didnt work, i uninstalled it like you said and it worked great.
I updated them today Friday the 13th, no less and my network speed was horrid. I rolled them back, and if anything, it seems faster than ever. Why would Vista suggest updating to those terrible drivers? Sorry, we are talking about Vista here, which is a bloated mess, and a gamers nightmare.
Realtek should be ashamed, as well. Thanks again, people! Spent 2 days on this problem, Microsoft should be ashamed.
Can confirm removing McAfee Crap can fix the slow network issue. Read this, uninstalled McAfee, now normal speeds. Hi, This problem does not only effect RTL nic. I have been trying to find a cure for cronic network speeds. Seen this site and started thinking! First I tried the Intel support site, only to find that the Gigalan is not vista compatiable. Apparently Vista Basic limits half open connections to just 2, Vista Ultimate has 25 half open limit………….
Had the same issue. Anyone know of a virus software that works well with Vista? I got rid of the pre-installed Norton and switched to Kaspersky labs, which seems to work just fine with my Vista Home Premium and does not slow downs the network.
I should mention first I have bell sympatico high speed internet. This applies to anyone with slow internet speeds and a speedstream running in bridge mode. It wont slow your computer down like norton does and it found, stopped and removed everything mcrappy found but could not remove itself.
Thats my 2… or 20cents if it helps anyone. Hi, I have been really struggling with this slow wireless connection problem on my new laptop that has Vista Business installed.
I have tried everything incl. That did the trick! When I boot into safe mode with networking, this problem goes away, so there has to be something else going on here. Laying my pc on its side it was designed for either standing up, or on its side was the solution that worked for me. Wow thanks! I was close to throwing my new laptop out the window until I read this.
Internet is back to normal. Fix: Turned off auto negotiation. Driver being used was circa Jan 1, Nothing happened so…Rolled back Realtek driver to version.
Nothing happened so I Rebooted. Installed Realtec update from Windows Vista Update. Realtek ver 6. Thank you everyone. Stick to OSX if you want easy. Thank you very very much! Has anyone with the Broadcom network driver figured out a fix yet?
A brand new computer not even being able to upload or download anything reasonably is so frustrating! It should not be up to us, customers, to figure out the secrets of Windows Vista. It should not be up to Microsoft to penalize us, customers, for having to use this horrible OS.
Computers are already at a stage that every child must use it, and it should be made easier, not more complex to use. Everyone does not have an IT on staff. Hello initially i had absolutely no problems with my vista ultimate nor networking issues until…2 days ago.
Im runing the intel core 2 processor with 2. I read all of the posts here and on various websites over the last 24 hours and nothing seems to come to my aid. Im noticing a drastic drop in speed where i would generally get lightning fast speeds when downloading and exploring now the downloads will start at the accelerated rate and all of a sudden go back to a crawl just as everyone above me has described.
Late last night i decided to take it upon myself to attempt one last thing before decided to format the hard drive and say enough with vista for right now and decided i would uninstall all items associated with my board and plug in play devices. Fuzzybear try doing what i did as i see this is the only fix until the driver updates are sufficient.
THru process of elimination my onboard sound card, which i dont even use, or some other device caused the poor performance of my networking so try uninstalling all of those devices, not just the networking card, and then reinstall them with older drivers as it should work.
Thanks to all, we bought a new Dell, got the wirelsess connection working but internet was so slow images would barely apear. Finaly my wonderful big brother suggested that it might be a conflict with which network adapter it uses. On the left menu choose All Processes, then choose the Detection tab. Un check scanning of Network Drives, and then at the bottom of this window, add the drives your are transferring from to the Exclude section by browsing to that drive.
Be sure to select Include Subfolders. Do this on both PCs. This will temporarily fix your transfer problem. Once you are done. Change the settings back if you desire to do so. What did help was replacing the firmware with an open source version, called dd-wrt. Go to dd-wrt. Then enjoy your nice, functioning internet! Best decision I ever made. New computer running Vista, I like it, however I have slow network downloads. I have run a speed test kbps and kbps. Is this normal??
My neighbour can download a 2 G file off the net in 30 minutes or less but mine takes days?? Please help! My eyes are getting tired. To Krys Neighbor has a faster service is a possibility. Downloading the same file in 30 secs? You should be fine, if that speed is what your ISP promises. Im having the same problems, I just bought a new Dell Dimension with Vista, totally crap download speeds, but I have a laptop with Vista and a laptop with XP and their download speeds are fine, all running from the same router, cant figure out whats different about the new one, uninstalled McAfee.
I cant believe Internet through Vista is actually running at normal speeds. I tried disabling encryption, all firewalls and anti virus, rolling back the driver-nothing prevailed. After reading the posts, focus shifted back to wireless driver. I uninstalled the Atheros wireless driver. Since Vista auto reinstalls, I rebooted then uninstalled a second time-this 2nd time Vista prompted for a reboot. Before the uninstalls, I deleted a wireless driver listed in programs and features in Control Panel -I believe this may have been key.
I never fathomed connecting to a wireless network could be so tedious. Thanks to all the great advice.
The First time I tried to set up a newtowk using a crosswire cable. Tried to set up the network again and managed to get the two computers to connect using the crosswire cable but when I check for shared files there was only the music file with 23 folders in it which is about half the amount that should be there.
There was no mention of my shared documents or anything. Tried then again to do a Easy Transfer using a netwok cable which states the speed is mps but it is incredibly slow and would takes hours if not days. Is there an easier way to transfer all my music including itunes folder , documents, and photos which I have a lot of to my new laptop? Finally I rang Dell because the Computer is only a week old, and realistically its their problem, bingo fingers crossed they admitted to having problems with the broadcom wireless adapter that came with my dell, they sent me a new belkin adapter and straight away things went back to normal.
It got a signal and could browse the internet etc, however it was SLOW! I emailed D-Link and they suggested changing the channel on the router, It was on channel 1, I changed to channel 10 and speed went straight back up, more than perfect!
No driver issues or Microsoft update affecting it. Just the channel! Hope this helps some people! This is a known issue in their product, yet they do not readily make this information available on their website. Vista in itself is also a crappy OS. There are way too many things to list here that you need to do in order to get it to run at an acceptable speed. Most of which have included running many third party utilities to test and tweak and settings in the OS.
On a side note, I think it comical that both Dell and McAfee, being in bed together on this issue, have not made the speed issues known to their customers, not even on their websites. This issue is almost a year old and neither Dell nor McAfee have been able to provide a fix. Also, for Internet usage, consider using Mozilla Firefox. Vista is just a piece of junk. None of the above solved my issue.
Waste of money. Turned off Windows firewall Installed Firefox changed ipv4 ip. You have to go to the ip address that is linked to your router, it should be stated in your manual, something like Goodbye, Aspirins and Advils at the end of the day, frustration and depression when I found out all my files were rendered useless after I copied them to my external harddrive now GB of useless junk. Here is the real Fix, it is SpyBot, when I hit immunize, it slowed down my internet drastically, when i removed SpyBot my internet got back to normal, i further tested it, by installing spybot again, it slowed me down, so i uninstalled it again and my internet got back to normal again, so SpyBot is the Culprate!!!
Am using VirusScan Enterprise 8. Hi, I have a problem with the network detection in vista ultimate. I also use a dialer to connect to net. It also takes long time to connect to net and for disconnection. It really bugs me and I am tired of searching for a fix all over net. I hope you could solve this problem for me. Its the only reason I have changed back to XP. Expecting immediate resolution. I have similar issues as described here: very slow internet through my Belkin F5D ver.
Moreover, the internet access is destroyed also for my second PC and my laptop, both being connect via WLAN to the same router. This re-dial process is repeated non-stop until I disconnect the LAN cable. Bloddy Hell, I solved my problem!
See the above post I realized it was not Vista since my router kept on re-dialing even with my new Packard Bell switched off! No Vista tweaks, no new firmware for the Belkin router, just the stupid card!
Now, after all, I would rather blame the router for not being able to handle the Realtek card. Can you people recommend anything? You do realize that you should be getting twice that much, do you? The file copy is just horrendously slow. What version did you have and when version did you rollback too? I have a Dell inspiron s with a broadcom wireless card in it. I have uninstalled mcafee, even though windows still detects it in the protection center in teh firewall and malaware protection.
I have 3 computers connected to my belkin f5d router. After reading this entire post and maybe 30 more, I finally figured out the issue on my brand new HP laptop. It came with Vista Home Premium, and a trial version of Norton installed. I removed Norton 2. I turned the firewall off entirely 3. Tried the Netsh command 4.
Updated wireless driver with one directly from Intel 5. Installed new wireless driver directly from HP. Disabled IPv6 7. Disabled QoS Packet Scheduler 8. Scrathed head and yelled Put everything back like it was out of the box, excluding Norton and Firewall status. At this point I was grasping at straws and decided I had eliminated about everything, except a wireless-N problem with this specific card. I changed the Wireless-N Mode enabled option in the device driver to disabled and just connected at Wireless-G speeds.
No reboot, just fast speeds. I was in shock, to say the least. Just to make sure, I enabled N mode again and sure enough, slows to a crawl. Disabled and back to normal.
We are talking huge differences here. While I enjoy a challenge, I do not enjoy the headache! They don't even list this model on their site. I swear there is no EF or EM on the sticker on this machine or in the system info in firmware. It's not. I can see it on the Mac in the Airport menu.
I don't even have to run Kismet to see it. But in Vista, it keeps telling me that the settings aren't valid for a network. Vista cna see the network but not connect to it. It really wants me to import the settings using a USB flash drive, so I did that. I also tried every entry manually. The settings that work on XP and are exported to my flash drive or printout for manual entry are:. In Vista, however, these options aren't selectable this way.
For instance, with an open network authentication type, WEP is not a selectable option. Key index is driven to 1, 2, 3, or 4, but not a zero or blank. How can I connect from Vista to a working encrypted wireless network, that it can see, that my XP computes can connect to? I've tried every option of every menu multiple times.
I even tried to reset my router back to store values to start unencrypted and start fresh, but I could get it to that either. I was lucky to get back to where I was. Windows Zero Connect was no help either. Any ideas? As many things can contribute to wireless connection issues, the most commoon items I found that causes wireless problems are:. One of the most common sources of wireless connection problems is interference operating at the same frequency as cordless phones, baby monitor, etc….
If you are running a firewall make sure it's not blocking access to the router. If it is, enable it so Vista can see it. XP and Vista are not the same. If you had a wireless card that used to work on XP and now it won't work on Vista, it may be incompatible with Vista driver only works on XP. Try using a different adapter.
I fixed it! Thanks for the tips. I had pretty much checked all this but it inspired me to run a step-by-step systematic diagnostic of my own. Maybe this will help someone else. I connected the laptop to the router with a hard LAN cable so I could maintain control of the router while troubleshooting the wireless connection. First I disabled all firewalls to confirm that there was no interference, which there wasn't. Then I took the router down to an unencrypted basic state to confirm it would connect via the wireless adapter, which it would.
I then turned back on the Norton Internet Security firewalls, and connectivity was still good. I then increased encryption on the router one step at a time, matching the settings on the wireless network properties. I went to WEP with a hexadecimal key, and got good connectivity.
I then increased to digit WEP and reestablished a good connection. I then went to WPA personal successfully. The frustrating thing was, aside from the time I spent figuring this out, was that nowhere did I see this idea of step-by-step increases in encryption or suggestions to reduce it.
No user guides, no help pages, not the manufacturer. The best help was this forum and the Linksys router guide I downloaded. Thank you.
I have solved my problem and hopefully someone else will benefit from my experience. That's great news! The valuable information you provided, should help out a lot more Vista users with wireless network problems. As you experienced, sometimes it just takes a little more digging to solve these pesky problems. I have a desktop running XP and a laptop running Vista. The desktop is wired to the Netgear router and the laptop connects wirelessly to the router.
The two computers share a printer and this works too. It all works but when I click on the little icons on the Vista laptop to see what wireless networks are available, there appears to be two. The other says it is an un-named and unsecure network. There is nothing I can do to connect to this unnamed network. If I turn off the wireless operation of my router, both these apparent networks dissappear.
I have WEP security enabled. What is going on? What is this second network? And can I get rid of it. It must be coming from my router I guess. More than likely the 2nd network is from your neighbor and somehow your Netgear router is picking it up.
When I see odd things like that on my Network, I know it's time to change all security settings on the router…you may want to do the same thing.
Nope, I do not believe is not a neighbour. I do see other networks, but this unsecure un-named one dissappears if I turn off the wireless operation of my router. Surely that means it is something to do with my router. Any external network should still show up on the laptop shouldn't it?
I think it's the remnant of when you had your network up before. I found that when I changed the name of my network, the old name stayed as a viable option to select — even though the router was no longer transmitting that name.
Try turning on broadcast mode again until you have everything solved. Change the name to something else so you can tell which is which, and use WPA. Then, if you find an old network that isn't "real" anymore, delete it by using the REMOVE option when you have all available networks showing. Ken Croft — look like you are not the only Netgear user who has encountered this. Disabling SSID broadcast only disables broadcasting the name. The network will still be announced but no one will be able to connect to it.
Looks like you may not need to worry about it. Many thanks to you all. This was very helpful to know that I am not alone and that it is just a quirk of the Netgear router.
Just one more though, for Steve. Presumably this is in a menu somewhere in Vista? Thanks again Ken. Select Manage Wireless Networks. All the networks will be displayed — those your computer's wireless can see, and those it has ever chosen before such as hotels or airports, in case it ever sees them again. Select the network that you no longer want. The Change Adapter button becomes the Remove button green minus sign , available to be selected. Select Remove.
That network is removed from the list of available networks. Good luck. My laptop detects the D-Link router when I open "select a newtwork to connect to",but shows a red cross. It then tells me that the security settings in Vista do not match those for D-link. Any ideas. If you do, then you will need to configure the wireless adapter with the encryption settings on your laptop. I'm not sure if this is a similar issue. No issues connecting with unsecure networks. My problem is I can't access the internet if there is a security password requirement.
I never am prompted to enter the Network key. Something is probably set wrong on my system but I can't find a setting to force a password prompt if there is a secure access point.
Please, someone, help. At first I was able to "connect" but with limited access meaning no internet connection … I then disabled my router security and retried — I was then able to connect with no problem. Or you can open Network and Sharing center select Manage Wireless Networks from left pane , right click on the Network, select properties and check the box to Connect Automatically.
What do I do when the connect to a network says "the settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network. I have an issue with Vistas' wireless network settings.
I have to continually connect to the router manually. I have the same issue as Steve. Everytime I boot my laptop, I need to specify the network name, the security key and the type of encryption.
Despite checking the 'Start this connection automatically' box, it does not save the settings. Do you have any resource material that covers this type of issue? I find lots of good stuff that covers the opposite hooking a Vista into an XP wireless setup.
Thank you for your consideration. Sorry, Vista is neither easier nor more intuitive. To start with, simply by moving every single parameter to somewhere other than where it was, MS has made it harder on everybody.
Then there are the piles of extra things to set, unset, unlock, whatever. Researching to get a new laptop on a secured network that works just fine with two XP laptops, three Linux devices, and a Mac, I have even found suggestions that it takes creating a new entry in the registry.
If MS had spent half the effort on evolving XP, instead of making all new chrome with less functionality, maybe it would have worked better. I don't know if anyone can help me, but I was running XP on my computer until a virus made me wipe the whole thing clean, and Dell gave me the Vista installation CD instead.
So I installed Vista, and I am not sure on how to connect to the internet in my apartment. I live with 2 other people, and we have a wireless router in the living room, but somehow my computer is not picking it up. When I go into the 'Set up connection or network,' there is no option for me to manually add the wireless router. Is there a step that I am missing?
Or some form of hardware. Any advice would be helpful. Marisa:…This may not be the solution to your problem…. Do you have any problems connecting to a hard wired router or modem? I was able to connect to our wireless network just fine for months, than the day before i lost connection. On the other pc, i can stil see the network broadcasting and i can connect to it the laptop refuses to see and connect to it even after the following steps:. Click Start.
In the Start Search dialog box, type: cmd, and right-click cmd. Click Run as administrator. Restart the computer C 2. I have done all that is said and still i cannot see the network nor can I connect to it after manually adding it.
I am about ready to light it on fire if that would work, but I still have hope for someone out there to help me. Hi Team I am having problems trying to setup Vista Premium on wireless. I am not sure whether it is a problem with Vista or the wireless router settings.
I tried all other security options and it still doesn't work It picked up automatically by the laptop but it doesn't connect. I also have a problem accessing to internet using my wireless router. My wireless never ask me about the password for a WEP security enabled network, But it never connects neither… How could I insert the password in order to have access to the web? I'using windows vista…. Was i really talking to a ATT rep that i dont know.
I'm able to connect to some unsecured networks neighbors, etc and even to a few that say they are secured poor setting of passwords IMO, since I was able to guess them. However, I'm not sure how secure my computer is on unsecured networks. Right now if I want to do any banking or anything that could be potentially "dangerous" I do it on my desktop PC that does not have wireless connection, just direct to the modem.
That's about as safe as you can get from your desktop to your router…beyond that is anybody's guess on who's tapped in. Did you get a fix for this?
I'm having the same problem, using WEP security. Don't have a domain name to give.. My laptop is a compaq presario windows vista and my router is a D-link DIR When i view my network sharing and sharing center window it shows that my laptop is connected to my home network and to the internet but when i check the HP home network center, it shows that my laptop's wireless adapter is connected to my Home network via my wireless router but I am not connected to the Internet. I was able to connect to the internet on the first day i tried to use the wireless network then after 2 or 3 days, i have no more access to the internet.
I've already tried rebooting our modem, router and PC and disabled and enabled my laptop's wireless network but it's not working. Your help will be greatly appreciated. I'm getting so frustrated because school is almost starting. Please contact your network administrator or Internet service provider. Hi, my laptop is Compaq Presario C The wireless switch button is not working, and i follow the 3rd step of " Manually Setup a wireless connection " i found that i have only 4 options, i dont have the option which is highliighted in the step 3 " Manually connect to a wireless network ".
My school has a wired and wireless network all computers there are macs. My new Dell pc — using vista- recognizes the wireless network and says it's connected however when I open Internet Explorer it searches for the homepage but then says " Page cannot be displayed". Can anyone tell me why I cannot get on the internet wirelessly? I cannot get online using the ethernet cable either using Vista. Is it possible to put in the ip address etc manually on Vista?
I can do this with my mac and it works fine. I also have an older pc using Windows and I can connect to the network using the ethernet cable.
